MOTIF BESPOKE enhances the timeless charm of this century-old traditional residence
ModuleX® was selected for use at TOKI NO NE, a restaurant and guesthouse (with six rooms available each day) created by renewing and renovating a one-hundred-year-old traditional residence in a tranquil area just outside the center of Tateyama City, at the south end of the Boso Peninsula.
For the lighting design, we were asked to incorporate decorative lighting that evokes the atmosphere of a century-old traditional Japanese house. In response, we designed and produced a custom ModuleX® product, MOTIF BESPOKE, in line with the interior design theme.
This form of decorative lighting––used in the entrance, guest rooms, and garden––further enhances and deepens the character of the building.
At the entrance of the main building, guests are welcomed by striking decorative lighting as they pass beneath the traditional entrance curtain.
Final on-site adjustments were made to the fixture placements in careful consideration of the view from a distance to create a lighting plan that heightens guests’ sense of anticipation and excitement for the dining experience ahead.
To emphasize the gentle glow of the decorative lighting, we installed functional lighting only where necessary. Our Filter Lighting Design™ technology softly illuminates the walls, enhancing the materials and artworks in guest rooms and the entrance in ways that decorative lighting alone could not achieve.
Additionally, to create a relaxing atmosphere for guests during their stay, we applied our original Lighting Modulation in Viewing Angle Range® lighting design method, determining the placement and intensity of illumination in a manner that takes the balance of light between the garden outside and the interior into account.
Decorative lighting and gradient lighting that highlights the textured surfaces of the uneven earthen walls paired with functional lighting adds a sense of depth and rhythm to the space, creating a lighting plan that invites guests to fully appreciate the materials, the environment, and the slow, tranquil passage of time.
