Connections and transitions expressed through light

ModuleX® was selected for the renewed LEXUS MEETS... in Hibiya, Tokyo, which has reopened as a café lounge where visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese sweets and the unique charms of regions across Japan.

The interior is designed to allow guests to relax with a smile and reflect on the close connections that roads and cars have fostered with people and communities. It is furnished with spacious sofa and table seating, and enhanced with artworks inspired by the concept of roads and the destinations to which they lead. This comfortable space also offers views of the Hibiya cityscape as it transitions over time.

To ensure a consistently comfortable visit at any time of day, we applied our original Lighting Modulation in Viewing Angle Range® and Time Sequence Design® lighting design methods to the lighting plan in consideration of the optimal placement and intensity of light throughout the space. The focal points and intensity of the lighting are set to change during the daytime and after sunset, allowing the artworks to naturally draw the eye and guiding guests deeper inward where they can relax and enjoy their meal.

During the day, external light filters through the art shelves into the lounge, while gradient lighting along ceiling perimeters illuminates the walls from above, gently harmonizing the brightness with the interior ambiance. The lighting’s focal point is set higher during the day, allowing guests to enjoy their meals in a relaxed yet refreshing brightness.

After sunset, the focal point lowers, highlighting the tables and enhancing the dining experience, while subtly blending the nighttime cityscape into the interior. The shifting light effects gently express the passage of time throughout the day.

Using our lighting fixtures, which are glare-controlled using our proprietary optical control technology, we eliminated the presence of lighting fixtures on the ceiling and created clear lines of sight, enhancing the spatial effect of a “path” through the interior.
