THE CAMPUS

When Kokuyo recently revamped its Tokyo Shinagawa Office,
dubbed THE CAMPUS, it decided on ModuleX® lighting.

THE CAMPUS serves both as a diverse workplace and as a public space
for local visitors, so the client wanted to create
“an office that is open to the city” that merges inside and outside
environments and makes the occupants of the space feel connected
with nature. To come up with a lighting design to help realize this vision,
we used our original Lighting Modulation in Viewing Angle Range®︎
method to figure out how much illumination to apply at
different positions in the space and how the feeling at these positions
changes through the day.

Since natural light impacts a space differently on sunny and
cloudy days, we took advantage of ModuleX® Controls at the entrance
to automatically adjust the brightness of the space throughout the
hours of daylight in response to the prevailing weather conditions.

In all areas, we limited the shape of spotlights to a single type and
positioned them at the same height as air conditioners to give the
space a sense of visual unity. We also changed the necessary light
quality at each position using our original ModuleX® Filter Lighting®︎
technology for adjusting the balance between electric and natural lighting.

With nighttime in mind, we used our ConsciLed® light tubes to make
THE CAMPUS visible from the pedestrian deck of Shinagawa Station.
When approaching the facility from the station on foot, the spiral
staircase and characteristic mesh material and form of the bridge
handrails crystallize gradually into view.

This lighting design makes very conscious use of natural light,
to make the public area inviting to passersby and to create an
ideal space to pass some time pleasantly at any time of day.
